Headaches & Migraines FAQ with our Columbus Chiropractor

Woman waking up with a migraine

Our chiropractor Columbus GA is often asked about the painful headaches. We hope this FAQ answers some of your questions.

What are the Most Common Types of Headaches?

Tension Headache

Tension headaches are at the top of the list of most common type of headaches. A tension headache is generally caused by stress, anger, anxiety, and fatigue. Symptoms of a tension headache can include a sharp pain around the entire head almost as if someone put a very tight rubber band around the head. The temples are usually sore, the person may also experience pressure and pain in their neck muscles. A tension headache is more common in women, but men are also affected.

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are more common in men but can affect women. A cluster headache is considered the most severe type of headache (aside from the almighty Migraine). Much like the Migraine cluster headaches are triggered by a chemical in the brain. Cluster headaches generally only affect one side and come on suddenly with no warning, it also affects the eye and nose (bloodshot eye, runny nose and sometimes ear pain) is felt on the side affected by the headaches.

Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches cause pain just above the eyebrows and under the eyes near the bridge of the nose. A runny nose, swelling of the face, pressure in the face, ear fullness, and a fever are common with sinus headaches.

Migraines are the king of all headaches. Luckily about 20% of people having a warning called the “Aura” before the migraine strikes. An Aura can be flashing lights, zigzag lines, or other neurological symptoms that last about an hour before a migraine starts.

Migraines usually start as a dull ache that develops into a non-stop throbbing sensation and severe pain that is felt in the temples, front and back of the head – sometimes it affects the entire head and other times it only affects one side. Migraines also come with sensitivity to sound and light, nausea and vomiting. Migraines like cluster headaches are caused by a chemical reaction in the brain, it can last for several hours or several days.

Migraine Triggers

Migraines can be triggered by stress, hormone changes, weather changes, and even food. If the person can figure out the trigger with the help of a chiropractor, they may be able to reduce the number of migraines they experience.
